The announcement
On 5 August 2026, Mondi described a concept pairing a corrugated outer box with laser-marked flexible packaging. The company says artwork is applied during converting, avoiding conventional decorative printing plates. It also reports recognition in the Sustainability category of the German Packaging Award 2026. These are the supplier’s reported developments, rather than the results of a test by this publication.
A process can become an aesthetic
Our interpretation is a design opportunity: a restricted mark can encourage a stronger graphic system. Instead of treating every substrate as a neutral canvas for full-colour printing, ask what contrast, density and line quality the process naturally produces. A visual identity can grow from those constraints.
Make a sample sheet before a moodboard
For any unfamiliar marking technique, request a ladder of line weights, small type, solid areas and fine detail on the intended material. View it folded, curved and under the lighting where the pack will be handled. The sample gives a designer a more honest starting point than a screen effect that merely imitates the surface.
What still needs answering
A concept announcement does not establish that every application is ready for production. Availability, cost, marking limits and material performance belong in a supplier conversation. Keep visual claims separate from environmental claims, and ask for evidence for each.
